Mihalek’s Bill to Reopen Car Sales in PA Passes House, Heads to Senate

April 21, 2020

HARRISBURG – Rep. Natalie Mihalek (R-Allegheny/Washington) announced today her legislation that would require the Department of Community and Economic Development to issue a waiver allowing all car dealerships to open while respecting the recommended Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines has passed the Pennsylvania House of Representatives.

“The dealerships big and small across my district and across this Commonwealth have watched their 50,000 workers go without a paycheck and watched their customers cross state lines all while asking for a commonsense solution,” said Mihalek. “This legislation is that commonsense solution. This bill is for the people who need safe and reliable transportation and the people who want to provide it, the people who live and work across our Commonwealth. I want to thank my colleagues in the House for passing this legislation and I hope my colleagues in the Senate will do the same.”

On Monday, Gov. Tom Wolf indicated a willingness to make a concession to the auto industry by allowing online auto sales during the pandemic. The guidance issued to the auto industry by the administration states there is no “in-person viewing” of the vehicle, no test drives, and appraisals and all other negotiations must be done virtually. Mihalek believes this concession is filled with confusion and creates more questions than answers.

“To the consumers, dealers and workers in this industry who have suffered an undue burden with this shut down, let’s ease their burden and be the government that makes things simpler for our residents instead of standing in the way,” continued Mihalek.

Mihalek’s legislation, House Bill 2388, now heads to the Senate for consideration.
