HARRISBURG – Rep. Natalie Mihalek (R-Allegheny/Washington) of Upper St. Clair, took the oath of office at the state Capitol today and officially began her first term as state representative of the 40th Legislative District in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives.

Mihalek was elected in November to fill the seat vacated by Rep. John Maher, who served Bethel Park Borough and Upper St. Clair and Peters townships for 21 years.  Maher did not seek re-election.

“I am grateful to the citizens of the 40th Legislative District for choosing me to represent them in Harrisburg and I look forward to serving,” said Mihalek.  “There are many important issues on the agenda for the 2019-20 legislative session, not the least of which will be a very challenging state budget. I am also mindful of the need to address the state’s opioid crisis, establish policies that encourage the creation of family-sustaining jobs and ensure that our children receive a good education in a safe environment.”

Mihalek, a native of Allegheny County and mother of three, is one of 51 women elected to the House in November – the largest percentage of female legislators to date. While women still comprise less than 25 percent of House members, their numbers are growing and Mihalek is proud to be among them.

She enlisted in the U.S. Navy following high school, serving in the elite nuclear power program, of which only 1 percent of the sailors admitted were women. After her military service, she returned home to Allegheny County where she attended the University of Pittsburgh, earning bachelor’s and law degrees before beginning her legal career in the Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office.

“As a member of the House, I will work to protect citizens from out-of-control taxes and job-killing government regulation and ensure the kind of future that will give today’s children and future generations a reason to stay here and raise their own children.”

Mihalek and her husband, Jeremy, reside in Upper St. Clair with their three young children.

The 40th Legislative District includes Bethel Park Borough and Upper St. Clair Township in Allegheny County and Peters Township in Washington County.
