HARRISBURG – Rep. Natalie Mihalek (R-Allegheny/Washington) today announced grant funding was awarded to several local governments within the 40th Legislative District, including a $500,000 grant to continue renovations at Peters Township’s Peterswood Park.

“The project at Peterswood Park’s baseball fields has been in various phases of construction for a few years because of the dedicated work of local officials who have been planning, fundraising and advocating for quite a while,” said Mihalek. “This grant keeps that momentum and soon, Peters Township families and visitors will have another first-class resource.”

Baseball fields one and two at Peterswood Park are among the oldest facilities in Peters Township. Officials there have been improving dugouts and press boxes and began replacing the turf on field two earlier this year. The grant will be used on field one, where drainage issues will be remedied, and artificial turf will be installed.

A few miles away in Upper St. Clair Township, residents will also see work on athletic facilities at the Morton Field Complex. A $641,300 grant will be used for the second phase of improvements to include soccer goals, turf grooming equipment, trash receptacles, benches and playground equipment.

The grants, known as Local Share Account grants, support economic development, job training, community improvement and public interest projects through gaming funds collected under the PA Race Horse Development and Gaming Act (Act 71 of 2004).

The Bethel Park School District has also received a $1.7 million grant through the Public School Facility Improvement Grant Program for a roof replacement project at Independence Middle School. School district leaders have been working to replace the more than 89,000-sqaure-foot roof at a cost of more than $3.4 million.

“I know of no local government that doesn’t have a ‘wish list’ of projects but coming up with the finances is always a challenge,” said Mihalek. “This grant system helps close those gaps and helps municipal leaders provide resources without passing the burden on to taxpayers.”

Additional grants to municipalities in the 40th Legislative District include:

• Municipality of Bethel Park - $338,186, to construct an ADA-compliant restroom at Miner’s Park.
• Municipality of Bethel Park - $52,407, to purchase a new police vehicle.
• Peters Township Sanitary Authority - $300,000, to upgrade the Brush Run Water System.
• Peters Township School District - $300,000, for a roof replacement project at Bower Hill Elementary School.
