HARRISBURG – Rep. Natalie Mihalek (R-Allegheny/Washington) was recently appointed to the House Appropriations Committee for the 2021-22 Legislative Session. This marks five committees she serves on: Appropriations, Judiciary, Human Services, Liquor Control, and Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness.
The Appropriations Committee will evaluate spending requests from state agencies and craft a budget proposal. “State spending affects all of us,” Mihalek said. “I'm thankful for this appointment at such a crucial time for our state’s economy.”
The Judiciary Committee will focus on criminal justice reform, crime victims, firearms, law enforcement, animal cruelty and more. “As an attorney, Judiciary Committee issues are very near and dear to me,” said Mihalek. “During my first term, I authored several pieces of legislation aimed to protect crime victims and address domestic violence. I am grateful for the opportunity to continue this work to further lift up safety and security within our state.”
While serving on the Human Services Committee, she will focus on issues such as assistive technology, attendant care, substance abuse, homelessness, disability and mental health. “Getting our people the help they need to be a healthy member of society is vital and I am eager to get back to work on this committee,” Mihalek said.
Mihalek and her colleagues will evaluate the Pennsylvania Liquor Code as part of the Liquor Control Committee. “Businesses, specifically those that serve alcohol, struggled a great deal in 2020 while combatting COVID-19,” Mihalek said. “I am committed to protecting these businesses and finding ways to assist in their recovery.”
The Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee will tackle National Guard personnel issues, flood/disaster assistance, volunteer EMS billing, arrangement of purchasing flags for veterans’ graves and emergency management inquiries. “Being a veteran myself, I know how important care for our veterans is,” said Mihalek. “I will be a strong voice in this committee, ensuring our services for those who have served are just as strong.”
