Mihalek Supports 2019-20 State Budget
HARRISBURG – Rep. Natalie Mihalek (R-Allegheny/Washington) today voted in favor of a $33.997 billion state budget proposal which features no new taxes, no tax increases and no additional fee and focuses on adding significant funds to the state’s Rainy Day Fund, and increasing spending on education.
“I was pleased to vote on a state budget that does not include any new or increased taxes or fees,” said Mihalek after the vote. “I am also pleased to report that with this budget, we have significantly increased education funding, which means that the school districts of Upper St. Clair, Bethel Park and Peters Township will each receive about a 3% increase in state funding, which is a win for our district.”

The budget proposal passed by the House includes a $432 million increase in preK through 12th-grade education funding. Additionally, special education funding would be increased by $50 million, while career and technical education would receive increased by $10 million
This budget proposal takes a historic step by committing at least $250 million into the Commonwealth’s Rainy-Day Fund, which is the state’s savings account and is used when the economy hits a downturn and revenue collections are weak.
“As lawmakers, we must be fiscally responsible with saving and managing our funds. When times are good, we want to take advantage and save money for future times of need,” Mihalek said.
Although the House passed the budget on Tuesday, it still needs to be approved in the Senate and signed by the governor.
